Women’s Swimming Sweeps Weekly Conference Awards

The season-opening meet of the women’s swimming team brought home both of the Northeast Conference’s weekly swimming awards. Sophomore Venna Andersen won Swimmer of the Week and took the top spot in every individual event she swam; freshman Allie Bashor won Rookie of the Week honors and took first in two individual events.

Marshall, professor of education, presented a keynote address about her innovative Synchronous Online Flipped Learning Approach at the DisCo 2021 educational technology conference in Prague. Dr. Marshall joined educators from 16 nations to discuss how instructional technology will shape the future of education.

NBA Celebrates Alumnus’ Record-Breaking Career

Herb Turetzky ’68, ’73 was named the official scorer emeritus for the Brooklyn Nets during his National Basketball Association retirement celebration. Turetzky holds the Guinness World Record for most professional basketball games scored and is a member of the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.

France’s Highest Civilian Honor Awarded to Activist Alumna

Irene Natividad ’71 was granted the Legion d’Honneur by French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron for her lifelong commitment to gender equality activism. Natividad joins other non-French nationals to receive the award including Eleanor Roosevelt, Bill and Melinda Gates, Sir Paul McCartney, Jesse Jackson, Toni Morrison, and General Dwight Eisenhower.

Pharmaceutical Executive Appointed Board Chairman

Dieter Weinand ’87 will lead the board of directors for Inspirna Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing first-in-class cancer therapeutics. Weinand previously served in executive leadership roles at major global pharmaceutical companies including Bayer Pharma AG, Pfizer, and Bristol-Meyers Squibb.

Women’s Hockey Voted Conference Preseason Favorite

The LIU Sharks have been tapped as favorites to finish atop the conference in the 2021-22 season by the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The defending champs are chasing a three-peat after winning the NEWHA championship in back-to-back seasons since joining the conference in 2019.

OnStage Blog Profiles Rising Theatre Alumnus

Tanner Bolin ’18 was interviewed by the popular theatre blog after his recent appearance in Gossip Girl on HBO Max. Bolin credited much of his success to his professors and mentors in the University’s theatre program, which OnStage ranked among the top-30 performing arts programs in the nation.

Non-Profit Executive Named Chief Financial Officer

Henry Estrada ’84 serves as the chief financial officer of The Betty Griffin Center, a shelter for victims of domestic violence in Florida. He previously served as CFO of family-support service provider The House Next Door Inc., and as a financial consultant to numerous nonprofits.

NBA’s LaMelo Ball Donates Roc Nation Scholarship

LaMelo Ball announced a four-year scholarship for a student majoring in sports management or sports communication & marketing at the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports and Entertainment. The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year’s scholarship will award one lucky student who meets academic qualifications and submits a written essay about how the LaMelo Scholarship will help their 10-year vision come to life.

Meaghan Hogan Announced as VP of University Relations

Meaghan Hogan brings over 15 years of experience driving results in university fundraising and engagement to her new role as vice president of university relations. She previously helped drive efforts that tripled principal gifts and more than quadrupled fundraising for the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University. She also served as the vice dean of institutional advancement for the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
