NYC Mayor Appoints Alumna to Lead New Pay Equity Cabinet
Dina Simon ’01 was appointed by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to lead his new Pay Equity Cabinet aimed at fighting race- and gender-based wage disparities. Simon brings more than 20 years of senior leadership in city government offices including as an integral member of the Taskforce on Racial Equity and Inclusion.

University Joins Nationwide Pharmaceutical Study
LIU Pharmacy joined top pharmacy schools around the country in the RAPID Alliance Medications 360 Study. Their goal is to transform how medications and vaccines are delivered in the U.S. Participating institutions will lead an effort to create strategies and a nationally prioritized research agenda from 2022 to 2031.
Leading Goal Scorer Earns Conference Honors
Men’s soccer sophomore Emil Jaaskelainen was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks after leading the Sharks to a six-game winning streak. Jaaskelainen’s 11 goals rank him first in the NEC and tied for the second-most goals in the nation.
Accounting Expert Appointed as Esports CFO
Roy Anderson ’81 was named chief financial officer of Allied Esports Entertainment Inc., a global network of esports properties and content production facilities. He brings more than 30 years of accounting expertise to the role, most recently as a partner with the international firm Mazars.
Palmer School Student Publishes Research Paper
Amanda Raquel Dorval, a student in the Palmer School of Library and Information Science, published her research paper “The Iraqui Ba’ath Archives: Collective Memory Loss and Authoritarian Nastalgia in the Post-Saddam Era” in the Penn State University Press. Dorval is a seven-year Air Force Veteran who served as a cryptologic Arabic language analyst.
Royal Geographical Society Elects Honors College Director
Dr. Alexander More, associate professor and director of the Honors College, joined legendary intellectuals such as Charles Darwin as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. The United Kingdom-based learned society has supported the world’s most relevant scientific expeditions since 1830. This honor will help Dr. More enhance his innovative research on climate change and environmental health.
Researcher Studies Groundbreaking Diabetes Treatments
Dr. Bhaskar Das, professor of pharmaceutical sciences, earned a grant from Insparin Therapeutics Inc. to develop potential treatments for insulin resistance, diabetes and hepatic steatosis. Dr. Das is testing the dose optimization, efficacy and safety of small molecules (peptidomimetics) that mimic peptides derived from adenovirus shown to improve glycemic control when tested in mice.
