Korean Consul General Speaks to Students

As part of our new Global Leadership Series, LIU welcomed Ambassador Kim Euy Whan, Korean Consul General, to speak on campus. In addition to university students, faculty and students from Locust Valley High School attended the discussion, where Kim spoke of the Consulate’s role in uniting the Korean community and strengthening relations between Korea and the five states he oversees.

Smithsonian Displays Alumnus’ Collection

Byron Lewis ’53 has been called the “original king of Black media” by the New York Times. After founding UniWorld in 1969, Lewis’ company went on to champion multicultural advertising and promote the interests of Black consumers. Clients included Mars Inc., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, AT&T, Ford Motor, the U.S. Marines and more. A collection from his groundbreaking career titled “Byron Lewis, Ad King Extraordinaire” is currently on display at the Smithsonian Museum’s Consumer Era section.

NSF Funds Black Hole Research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is funding new research from Dr. Steven Leibling, professor of physics, for his project “Magnetized Mergers of Black Holes and Neutron Stars with LES and Neutrino Transport.” Leibling is a distinguished expert on black holes and winner of the prestigious Buchalter Cosmology Prize in Physics.

Students Participate in China Town Hall

Four LIU students attended this year’s CHINA Town Hall with LIU Global’s dean, Ali Mazzara. The event connected leading China experts with Americans around the country for a national conversation on the implications of China’s rise on US-China relations. At this year’s Town Hall, Shaylin Martinez (center) was selected to talk with U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns.

Society of Presidential Descendants Announces Presidential Leadership Book Award Winner

The winner of the biennial Presidential Leadership Book Award, hosted by the Society of Presidential Descendants, is “The Peacemaker: Ronald Reagan, The Cold War, and the World on the Brink” by William Inboden. Based on thousands of pages of newly-declassified documents and interviews with senior Regan officials, the biography brims with fresh insights into one of America’s most consequential presidents.

Sound Advice: Young Guru and Jeff Price

Jeff Price, founder of Word Collections and Tunecore, sat down with Young Guru, renowned sound engineer and director of music technology, entrepreneurship and production at Roc Nation School, to share key insights into music rights, licensing and the future of digital audio distribution with Roc Nation School students.

Alumna Named Editor and Publisher

Rachel Hendrick ’12 has been named editor and publisher of Choice, a publishing unit of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. Before joining ALA, Hendrick worked at various national and international publishing houses, including Readers Digest, Conde Nast and Sotheby’s auction house.

Bernadette Castro Hosts Theodore’s Books Event

At the latest event in collaboration with Theodore’s Books, Bernadette Castro, former New York State parks commissioner, hosted a robust discussion about Theodore Roosevelt and Rick Marschall’s new book release, “The Most Interesting American.”  Audience members included students from Portledge School, community members and a very compelling Theodore Roosevelt impersonator.

Baseball and Cheer Teams Promote Inclusion

The basketball team recently hosted The League of Yes, an organization committed to creating and sustaining basketball programs for people of all ages with disabilities, for a day of fun and activities. The cheerleading team was on-site, providing enthusiastic support and encouragement to all participants.
