D’Alesio Advances to NCAA Wrestling Championship
Anthony D’Alesio secured his spot in the NCAA Wrestling Championships, becoming the first wrestler in LIU history to achieve this milestone since the school’s Division I inception. D’Alesio defeated nationally ranked Maximus Hale of the University of Pennsylvania with a score of 4-2 in the EIWA Championships, locking up the final NCAA qualifying spot in the 184-pound weight class.
Veterinary Technology Students Awarded Scholarships
Three students in the Veterinary Technology Program received scholarships: Ashley Doxey was awarded by the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association (LIVMA), Charlotte Kozlowski was awarded by the EQUUS Foundation and Amanda Antonucci Veterinary received the Technician National Examination Award from the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.
Roc Nation Student’s Super Bowl Experience
Margaryta Istomina, a junior in the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment, chronicled her 11-day experience working for Living Sport atSuper Bowl LVIII. Istomina appeared on the Living Sport podcast with CEO Alicia Marinelli, visited the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, attended player interviews and saw the iconic Vince Lombardi trophy. In her LinkedIn post, Istomina wrote: “I will remember this for the rest of my career, and I hope this is just the beginning!”
Award-Winning Professor Pens Feature for New York Magazine
Zaina Arafat authored a feature article for New York Magazine entitled “Witnessing Gaza Through Instagram.” Arafat is the author of the novel You Exist Too Much, which won a Lambda Literary Award in 2021. Her stories and essays have appeared in a number of national publications, including the NewYork Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, Harper’s Bazaar, BuzzFeed, VICE and NPR. Read the story here.
Women’s Hockey Coach Joins Team USA Staff
Shelly Picard was named a member of the 2025 U.S. Under-18 Women’s national team. Picard is an Olympic silver medalist and four-time International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Champion. As a player, she was a member of Team USA’s silver-medal run in the 2014 Olympics. Last year, Picard helped coach NHL draftees at the Buffalo Sabres’ development camp.

Swim Teams Win Gold Medals at NEC Championships
Five members of the LIU swim team, Alejandro Pascual Del Cid, Allie Bashor, Emilio Garcia, Dani Chocano Fernández and Benny Karlsson won gold medals atthe NEC Championships.
Broadway World Awards LIU Theatre, Dance Companies
Post Theatre Company (PTC) and Post Concert Dance Company (PCDC) took home several awards in the Broadway World’s 2023 rankings for Long Island. The two companies won Favorite Local Theatre, Best Play, Best Musical, Best Ensemble and Best Dance Production. Additionally, Zaramaria Fas’ performance in Dogs of Peace won “Best Performer In A Play,” AJ Lafond’s performance in Fever/Dream earned Best Supporting Performer In A Play and James Crichton claimed Best Music Direction & Orchestra Performance for Cabaret.
New College of Veterinary Scholarships Established in Honor of Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month, two new scholarships for African American students to study at Long Island University’s College of Veterinary Medicine have been established through generous funding from The Brady Hunter Foundation, and in coordination with the office of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The scholarships will provide 50% tuition assistance for African American students with financial need from within the five boroughs of NewYork City.
