The LIU Men’s Basketball team’s non-conference schedule features two of college hoops’ top teams. The Sharks kicked off their season this week and are headed to the West Coast to face the UCLA Bruins on Wednesday. The team will travel to South Florida to play the University of Miami in December. The Hurricanes made the Final Four last year.
Improving Mental Health Professions on Long Island
Six members of the Brentwood community were named as the first recipients of the Long Island Mental Health Professional Expansion Project Scholarship. The collaboration between LIU and the Brentwood Union Free School District is a partnership aimed at increasing the number and diversity of school-based mental health service professionals for communities that require more access to mental health services.
ABC News Highlights LIU Equestrian
ABC highlighted the LIU Equestrian team and facilities. With four outdoor rings with grass and dirt paddocks, along with an indoor barn, the team is able to practice and compete year-round in any condition. The Sharks recently competed at the NYU and Princeton show and emerged as the high point team. Watch the segment here.
Hundreds of High School Students Celebrate National Civics Day
National Civics Day, celebrated annually on October 27th, recognizes the importance of civic education across America. Civics Day was founded by the Roosevelt School and the Society of Presidential Descendants in 2021 and the day was formally approved by US Congress later that year. This year, Civics Day was commemorated at the Roosevelt School through a number of national and local events. The White House Experience in partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations Education hosted 140 students from area high schools to participate in governmental simulations, a virtual summit brought together national civic leaders for thought-provoking discussion, and a birthday party—with cake—honored Theodore Roosevelt’s 165th birthday.
Tweed Roosevelt Makes Case for Civics Education in Newsday Op-Ed
n his Newsday guest essay, published to coincide with National Civics Day on October 27th, Tweed Roosevelt, great-grandson of Theodore Roosevelt and the founder and chair of LIU’s Roosevelt School, implored US citizens to remember that their rights guaranteed under the Constitution are inseparable from their responsibilities. Breaking Ground: New Building at LIU Brooklyn to Transform College of Pharmacy
RXR, a leading real estate developer, recently broke ground on a new all-electric residential development project at 89 Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn. In addition to 324 residential units, the building will provide 55,000 square feet of academic and office space to be used by LIU faculty and students.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Educators
In a coordinated effort to build a robust, statewide educator pipeline in New York, the New York State Teachers Association has launched a new initiative: Take a Look at Teaching (TALAT). LIU’s CEIT Dean Laura Seinfeld and Associate Dean Cary Epstein brought the effort to local Long Island school districts, providing area high schoolers and middle schoolers with an in-depth look at the teaching profession. Teachers from the Oceanside School District called the opportunity “priceless. Our students had the privilege of witnessing the dedication, passion and unwavering commitment of educators to their profession and their students. And that had a huge impact on their commitment to pursue the field.”
Korean Consul General Speaks to Students
As part of our new Global Leadership Series, LIU welcomed Ambassador Kim Euy Whan, Korean Consul General, to speak on campus. In addition to university students, faculty and students from Locust Valley High School attended the discussion, where Kim spoke of the Consulate’s role in uniting the Korean community and strengthening relations between Korea and the five states he oversees.

Smithsonian Displays Alumnus’ Collection
Byron Lewis ’53 has been called the “original king of Black media” by the New York Times. After founding UniWorld in 1969, Lewis’ company went on to champion multicultural advertising and promote the interests of Black consumers. Clients included Mars Inc., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, AT&T, Ford Motor, the U.S. Marines and more. A collection from his groundbreaking career titled “Byron Lewis, Ad King Extraordinaire” is currently on display at the Smithsonian Museum’s Consumer Era section.
