John Legend Headlines Tilles Center Gala
Twelve-time Grammy Award winner John Legend delivered a special solo performance at the Tilles Center Gala on Veterans Day. The Gala recognized Long Island businesswoman Anne Shybunko-Moore, CEO and Owner of GSE Dynamics Inc., a woman-owned small business and defense manufacturer who has supported the United Veterans Beacon House which provides housing for Long Island veterans. Ten local veterans were given free admission to the event as part of the Tickets for Troops Program.
LIU Mourns the Passing of Simon Hodnett
The LIU community mourns the passing of track and field coach Simon Hodnett, ’05. Hodnett led LIU to 10 Northeast Conference championships during his career as head coach, earning his most recent team title at the 2019 NEC Men’s Indoor Championship. A 10-time NEC Coach of the Year, he coached nearly 500 All-NEC honorees during his 15 years in Brooklyn. Hodnett coached six individual Division I indoor and outdoor track and field All-Americans, three Olympians, one Indoor World Relay Gold medalist and one Outdoor World Relay Bronze medalist.
LIU Athletics Adds a High-Level Deputy Athletic Director
Long Island University announced the hiring of Elliott Charles as Deputy Director of Athletics. Charles, a Long Island native, previously served as director of athletics at Chicago State University from 2019 through 2022. Prior to that he held high-level athletics administrative positions at Clemson, Alabama, Florida A&M, South Florida, and Northern Illinois. Charles called his new position “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Leading Academic News Outlet Publishes Professor’s Research
The Conversation, a leading news outlet dedicated to academic research, published the research findings of Dr. Or Dagan, assistant professor of clinical psychology. Dagan co-authored the article about how attachment relationships to both mothers and fathers impact a child’s socioemotional and cognitive outcomes.
Men’s Basketball Takes on UCLA, Miami
The LIU Men’s Basketball team’s non-conference schedule features two of college hoops’ top teams. The Sharks kicked off their season this week and are headed to the West Coast to face the UCLA Bruins on Wednesday. The team will travel to South Florida to play the University of Miami in December. The Hurricanes made the Final Four last year.
Improving Mental Health Professions on Long Island
Six members of the Brentwood community were named as the first recipients of the Long Island Mental Health Professional Expansion Project Scholarship. The collaboration between LIU and the Brentwood Union Free School District is a partnership aimed at increasing the number and diversity of school-based mental health service professionals for communities that require more access to mental health services.
ABC News Highlights LIU Equestrian
ABC highlighted the LIU Equestrian team and facilities. With four outdoor rings with grass and dirt paddocks, along with an indoor barn, the team is able to practice and compete year-round in any condition. The Sharks recently competed at the NYU and Princeton show and emerged as the high point team. Watch the segment here.
Hundreds of High School Students Celebrate National Civics Day
National Civics Day, celebrated annually on October 27th, recognizes the importance of civic education across America. Civics Day was founded by the Roosevelt School and the Society of Presidential Descendants in 2021 and the day was formally approved by US Congress later that year. This year, Civics Day was commemorated at the Roosevelt School through a number of national and local events. The White House Experience in partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations Education hosted 140 students from area high schools to participate in governmental simulations, a virtual summit brought together national civic leaders for thought-provoking discussion, and a birthday party—with cake—honored Theodore Roosevelt’s 165th birthday.
