Alumna Joins Nation’s Top 25 Women In Cyber Security

Mary Byrne, chief operating officer of Immuta, a leader in cloud data access control, is one of the top women in cyber security in America. Byrne is recognized by Software Report on its Top 25 Women in Cyber Security list for her decades of leadership at a wide range of technology companies in the data services sector.

Sharks Track & Field Champions Recognized for Excellence

Men’s and women’s outdoor track and field athletes left their mark on the Northeast Conference in 2022 with 17 All-Conference honorees across all events. Sprinter Tara Hernandez was named Most Outstanding Performer for winning four events at the conference championship meet and distance runner Elyas Ayyoub took home Most Outstanding Rookie for winning two events at the conference championship.

Planning Specialist to Lead Luxury Rental Development

Sean Sallie ’11 was appointed as director of planning and development for Heatherwood Luxury Rentals, one of the largest developers of apartment communities on Long Island. Sallie’s 20-year background in urban planning includes serving as the deputy commissioner for planning at the Nassau County Department of Public Works.

School Business Expert Appointed as Superintendent

Michael Fabiano ’09 was selected as the assistant superintendent for business for the Levittown Public School District. Fabiano served as assistant superintendent for business for the past 12 years in the Floral Park-Bellerose School District and is a past president of the executive board of the Nassau Association of School Business Officials.

NIH Grant Funds Groundbreaking Study on Substance Use

Dr. Victor Lushin, professor in the department of social work, earned a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the social determinants of substance use disorder treatment outcomes among individuals on the autism spectrum. The study is the first in the U.S. to explore the epidemiology of substance use disorders in this potentially hidden at-risk population.

Long Island University’s Roosevelt School & The Society of Presidential Descendants Honor Doris Kearns Goodwin at Inaugural Gala

Brookville, NY, (June 8, 2022): The Roosevelt School and the Society of Presidential Descendants today announced they will host an inaugural gala, honoring Doris Kearns Goodwin, a leading presidential historian, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times #1 best-selling author, for her career achievements.

The inaugural event will be held on  June 11 at the LIU Post campus in Brookville. The schedule of events includes:

  • Panel discussions led by the Society of Presidential Descendants entitled “Living in the White House,” featuring personal stories of the Descendants’ ancestors and reflections on their leadership.
  • Symposium titled “What You Don’t Know About Theodore Roosevelt” on the personal life and legacy of President Theodore Roosevelt hosted by his great-grandson Tweed Roosevelt, president and co-founder of The Society of Presidential Descendants, and chairman and professor at The Roosevelt School.

“Long Island University is a national leader in presidential studies, service learning, and civic education,” said University President Kimberly R. The Gala will take place inside the “White House Experience” at The Roosevelt School, featuring replicas of the executive mansion’s most famous rooms.

“The gala will be a unique opportunity for participants to hear personal stories direct from family members about their presidential ancestors,” said Tweed Roosevelt. “We are proud to honor Doris Kearns Goodwin and bring together such renowned leaders to educate and encourage students to shape the future of our country.”

Long Island University Appoints Tom Dunn, formerly of Lincoln Center, as Executive Director, Tilles Center for the Performing Arts

Brookville, NY, (June 6, 2022): Long Island University announced that Tom Dunn will serve as the new executive director of Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Dunn has had an illustrious career in arts management highlighted by more than 16 years in leadership positions at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. He most recently served as executive director of the Southampton Arts Center since 2018. He will assume the new position effective Aug. 15, 2022.

Joins LIU from leadership posts at Lincoln Center & Southampton Arts Center

“We are thrilled that Tom Dunn will bring his vast knowledge of arts management and his incredible passion for live performance to Tilles Center,” said Long Island University President Kimberly R. Cline.

At Lincoln Center, Mr. Dunn served as senior director, concert halls operations, and was part of the senior management team that directed the $1.2 billion physical redevelopment of its 16-acre campus. Overseeing a budget of more than $20 million, he managed operations in David Geffen Hall, Alice Tully Hall, David Rubenstein Atrium, Kaplan Penthouse, Damrosch Park and other on-and off-campus venues. Previously, as a founding director, he oversaw the creation of the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, a multi-purpose performance venue and public space.

According to Reynold Levy, former CEO of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, “Tom played an integral role in the notable redevelopment and expansion of Lincoln Center. He has the rare talent of being able to bring bold visions to fruition and succeed even beyond the highest expectations.”

At the Southampton Arts Center (SAC), Mr. Dunn was instrumental in fulfilling its mission to present and produce inclusive, regionally relevant programs across all disciplines. During his tenure there, he successfully led the organization through the Covid-19 pandemic and oversaw the significant growth of the institution, including an increase of its annual operating budget by 70 percent. Mr. Dunn also initiated, managed and cultivated artistic collaborations with National Geographic, International Center of Photography, New York Academy of Art, Beyond the Streets, Hamptons Jazz Fest, Peter Marino Art Foundation and dozens of other national and local cultural organizations.

“I have been so fortunate in my career to do everything from writing, directing, producing and performing to creating and operating world-class venues that host preeminent artists,” said Tom Dunn. “Now, I look forward to expanding Tilles Center’s stellar run as the premier destination for live performance on Long Island. In addition to his work in arts administration, fundraising and operations, Tom Dunn is a writer, director and producer. He was co-author and director of the acclaimed off-Broadway comedy “Who Killed Woody Allen?” He has also created and developed projects with the Bravo, Epix and Oxygen television networks. Mr. Dunn resides in Huntington with his wife and three children.

LIU Baseball Faces Maryland in NCAA Playoffs

LIU is heading to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Bryant University 7-0 to clinch the Northeast Conference Championship. Right-hander Nick Torres pitched 6 1/3 innings in the decisive game and earned the NEC Tournament MVP award. The Sharks will face the University of Maryland in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on June 3 live on ESPN+.

Dedicated Trustee Named to Power List of Accounting

Bob Jahelka ’84, president of the LIU Post Alumni Association and a member of the Board of Trustees, was named to the Long Island Business News Power List of Accounting. Jahelka is the managing partner of DSJ CPA, an accounting firm that specializes in business management, financial planning and taxes pertaining to estates, trusts and businesses, as well as individuals.

Distinguished Professor Receives Fulbright Fellowship

Dr. Maria McGarrity, professor of English, received a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar Fellowship to conduct research and teach in the United Kingdom. Dr. McGarrity specializes in modern British, Irish, Caribbean, and Postcolonial literatures and theory, with a particular interest in the fall of the British Empire.
