Veterinary Students Teach Animal Health in Elementary Schools

The College of Veterinary Medicine is bringing its expertise to Nassau County elementary schools this summer as part of the federally funded “League of VetaHumanz” program. Students Rachel Pak and Christine Parascandola, as well as Professor Elena Contreras, deliver lessons on animal skeletons and skulls, the circulatory system, types of veterinarians, the cow’s digestive system, and viruses.

Brendon Rodney ’16 Wins Gold at World Championships

One of the University’s most decorated athletes, Brendon Rodney ’16, added to his track & field medal collection with a gold in the 4×100-meter relay for team Canada at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. Rodney holds multiple school records and is a two-time Olympic medalist, winning the bronze in the 4×100-meter relay for Canada in 2016 and 2020.

Wei Man Wang, a student in the College of Veterinary Medicine, received a Veterinary Student Research Fellowship from the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research. Wang’s research focuses on identifying safe, non-toxic bioactive compounds that can fight bacteria in respiratory disease in cows.

Groundbreaking Academic Study Shows Benefits of Play Among Children

Results of a study conducted by faculty researchers reveal significant upticks in math and reading scores among elementary school students who participated in an unstructured play program. The LIU research team released its findings after studying the Play Club at Central Academy of the Arts in South Carolina, an after-school program that gives students the opportunity for daily independent play time.
