Mitchell to Perform in Mozart Classic at Metropolitan Opera

Tina Mitchell, professor, will be performing in Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) at the Metropolitan Opera, a production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved fable by the same name. This is the second revival of this production, which performed most recently in Spain.

Historians Headline April Hutton House Lectures

The April Hutton House Lectures are highlighted by historians, including Alan A. Winter exploring Hitler’s rise to power, and Val Franco delving into Eleanor Roosevelt’s role in the Works Progress Administration. Marc Shapiro ’92 was named Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at Radin Health, a leading provider of AI-powered, cloud-based radiology workflow solutions. Shapiro has over 30 years of proven healthcare sales, marketing, business development, and leadership experience. He spent the last 7 years in radiology at Philips, leading the Southeast diagnostic imaging team cultivating relationships with radiologists, hospitals, and outpatient imaging center executives.

LIU Athletics Adds Women’s Flag Football, Triathlon

Long Island University has added women’s flag football and triathlon as intercollegiate sports. LIU will become the 43rd triathlon program to be added by a NCAA-member institution. Women’s flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country with more than 65 NCAA schools currently sponsoring teams.

$4 Million Grant Supports Mental Health Expansion Project

Dr. Kathleen Feeley and Dr. Dogukan Ulupinar from the College of Education, Information and Technology were awarded a $4 million grant by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) for the implementation of the Long Island Mental Health Professional Expansion Project.

National Non-Profit Awards FinTech CEO

Vamshi Reddy ’04 was named a recipient of the 2024 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award, awarded annually by the Asian American Business Development Center. Reddy is the President and CEO of Tuple Tech, a managed services and security provider that offers a variety of information technology services. Prior to starting Tuple Tech in 2017, he held leadership roles at Mitsubishi, Barclay’s, NewCorp and Merrill Lynch.

Nursing Student Named President of Statewide Association

Jasmine Gonzalez, a junior in the Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn School of Nursing, was elected President of the Nursing Student Association of New York State. Gonzalez (center), pictured alongside faculty members Christina Wong (right) and Julie Elting (left), is the first LIU student to achieve this distinction. With over 50,000 members, the National Student Nursing Association fosters professional development among nursing students across the country.

Spike Lee, Keith David on the 30th Anniversary of Clockers

Oscar-winning director and long-time friend of LIU, along with Emmy-winning actor Keith David screened Clockers on the Brooklyn campus in honor of the film’s 30th anniversary. Following the film, they sat down for a Q&A with students in the MFA in writing and producing for television. David, one of the stars of the film, is an Artist-in-Residence for LIU‘s School of Film and Digital Media. Lee’s long history with LIU began when a dedicated screening room was created for him, enabling him to run dailies during the early years of his career.

Football Season to Kickoff at University of Florida

The Sharks will be swimming down to “The Swamp” to kickoff the 2025 football season when LIU takes on the University of Florida Gators. Following the matchup with the three-time NCAA national champions, the Sharks will travel to Ypsilanti Michigan to take on Eastern Michigan Swoop before the home opener at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium on September 13. Hundreds of High Schoolers Visit White House Experience

Over 300 high school seniors visited the White House Experience and Museum of Democracy at Roosevelt School. The White House Experience includes a life-size replica of the White House with an Oval Office, Situation Room, and Press Briefing Room. Roosevelt School is home to over a million pieces of presidential history, including the largest collection of political campaign memorabilia in the U.S.
