Prestigious Alumnus Joins Forbes Top 30 Wealthiest Americans
Ray Dalio, founder and co-chief investment officer of the world’s largest hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, moved into the top 30 wealthiest people in America according to Forbes. Dalio’s firm now manages $154 billion, and he is well known for donating $1 billion of his fortune to philanthropic causes supporting microfinance and inner-city education.
Equestrian Team Gallops Into National Spotlight
Two Sharks won national titles at the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association National Championships, leading the University to a fourth place finish out of 300 teams in the country. Senior Kara Bromschwig finished first in the individual intermediate flat, and senior Mackenzie Ashe won first place in alumni over-fences.
Professor Elected Vice President of Physical Therapy Association
Michael Masaracchio ’01, chair of the physical therapy doctoral program, was elected as the vice president of the American Physical Therapy Association’s New York chapter. Masaracchio is a 2018 recipient of the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching and is an instrumental member of the faculty that developed the University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy degree program.
Shark Earns Esports National Championship Berth
Esports Junior Marco Castelli was crowned champion of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Xbox FIFA Spring Championship. Castelli will go on to compete in NextLevel’s FIFA 2022 College National Championship, where he will be one of 227 students from around the country competing for a total prize pool of $50,000.
Sharks Win Second Straight National Scholar All-America Title
The men’s wrestling team defended its title as the nation’s top Scholar Team All-America with the highest GPA in the country, according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Sharks outpaced Stanford University, Brown University, Cornell University and Duke University in the rankings, and four Sharks earned individual Scholar All-American honors.
Alumna Leads Cheerleading Company to National Championship
Tatiana Melani, ’12, ’13, founder of Beyond Cheer Athletics in New York City, led her non-profit competitive cheerleading program to its first regional championship. With the win, Beyond Cheer Athletics qualified to compete at the D2 Summit national championship competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World in May.

Hornstein Center for Policy, Polling and Analysis national poll reveal where Americans stand on the threat of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as the war enters its third month. 55% of respondents said that the conflict poses a threat to the United States, and 73% said it is a threat to the neighboring NATO countries in Europe.

RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE CONDEMNED BY NATO AND THE UNITED STATES
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) formally condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The United States is a member of NATO which is a defensive alliance of 30 countries across North America and Europe protecting one billion citizens that “provides a security guarantee that an attack on one of them is an attack on all of them” according to NATO. On April 28, 2022, the White House Called on Congress to provide more support for Ukraine “to help ensure Ukraine’s democracy prevails over Putin’s aggression.” Although Ukraine is not a formal NATO member, NATO considers Ukraine an “independent, peaceful and democratic country, and a close NATO partner.”
METHODOLOGY
This Long Island University Steven S. Hornstein Center for Policy, Polling, and Analysis online poll was conducted through SurveyMonkey from April 21 – 22, 2022 among a national sample of 1,584 adults ages 18 and up. Respondents for this survey were selected from over 2.5 million people who take surveys on the SurveyMonkey platform each day. Data for this week have been weighted for age and gender using the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to reflect the demographic composition of the United States. The modeled error estimate for this survey is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
