LIU Post Named to Prestigious National Transfer Honor Roll

Named as One of Just 65 Top Universities in Nation by Phi Theta Kappa

Brookville, NY—LIU Post was recently recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society as one of the top four-year universities in the country for creating dynamic pathways to support community college transfer students. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the world’s largest and most prestigious honor society for two-year college students. LIU Post is among just 65 colleges and universities recognized as members of PTK’s 2017 Transfer Honor Roll.

LIU Post was honored last month at the PTK Convention in Nashville, Tennessee based on its programs that support transfers, including: increasing the number of Phi Theta Kappa scholars into the University’s Honors College, creating a policy to respond to transfer student admission applications within 48 hours, and providing dedicated academic and admission advisors to transfer students.

“This honor is very meaningful because LIU Post places high importance on welcoming and supporting transfer students,” Rita Langdon, Director of Undergraduate Admissions said. “We value PTK scholars from our local institutions such as Nassau Community College, Suffolk County Community College, and Queensborough Community College, as well as across the country, and we hope they will make LIU Post their new home for undergraduate and graduate studies.”

Additionally, LIU Post was recognized for instituting the LIU-PTK Honors Scholarship Program, which provides one of the nation’s highest academic merit scholarships to PTK transfer applicants with a GPA of 3.5 and higher.

“Increasingly, students of all ages and achievement levels are choosing the community college, not only as their first step, but also their first choice, in the pursuit of a quality, affordable bachelor’s degree,” Phi Theta Kappa CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner said. “With this designation, we hope to connect community college students with institutions who value their unique transfer experience and prioritize their success.”

Transfer students considering their next step can learn more at LIU Post’s Transfer Registration Night on Wednesday, May 17 from 5:30-7:30pm in the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library.  For more information, students can contact LIU Post Transfer Admissions at 516-299-2900 or email post-transfer@liu.edu.

LIU Post’s Palmer School Awarded Prestigious iSchool Designation

LIU Post becomes first New York Metropolitan area member of iSchool Consortium, joining University of California, Berkley, Penn State and Carnegie Mellon

BROOKVILLE, N.Y.–Long Island University’s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences was recently admitted to the elite community of iSchools, an international consortium of prominent information schools with robust research traditions and well-established Ph.D. programs.  The organization promotes high-level research and higher education in the information disciplines.  Being part of this prestigious consortium is an honor shared with leading information schools around the world, including University of California, Berkley, Penn State and Carnegie Mellon.

“LIU’s Palmer School is honored to be a part of the prestigious iSchools consortium,” said Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, President of LIU. “As a member of iSchools our Palmer School students and alumni will have access to expanded opportunities in the global information industry, where they have already proven to be leaders in the field.”

One of the primary benefits is the close participation with other leading programs around the globe and the possibility of research and study collaborations that would benefit students, faculty and the greater LIU community.  The Palmer School is the only institution in metropolitan New York City with full tiered membership in the organization signifying its evolving emphasis in information studies.   Full membership requires an outstanding record of scholarship, a mature Ph.D. program, and significant external funding.

The Palmer School is a recognized leader in information and library science and is one of just 62 schools accredited by the American Library Association.  It also offers the only Ph.D. program in Information Studies in the New York metropolitan area and is looking forward to celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the program this coming Fall.

Once a year, the iSchools hold their international iConference, consisting of scores of papers related to information-related research, covering topics from information seeking behavior, to the economics of information, information ethics, information retrieval, applications of big data, social implications of the internet and other technologies, and knowledge organization.  The iConference has a unique emphasis on promoting a collective understanding of the evolving field of information studies.

Dr. Thomas D. Walker, Associate Dean of the College of Education, Information, and Technology and the Director of LIU’s Palmer School of Library and Information Science attended the most recent iConference in Wuhan, China.  He said, “Actively contributing to the iSchools’ annual iConference is a tangible way for the Palmer School and extended LIU community to be involved in international discussions of information studies research and education. The Palmer School is already playing a leadership role in related developments in the New York City area and through our inclusion in the iSchools consortium, we look forward to working with an expanded network to place LIU at the forefront of the evolving, 21st-century information culture.”

Sanford, is chairman of United National Corporation and has been honored as one of America’s top philanthropists by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.  Sanford’s growing collaboration with LIU has made it his premier partner on the East Coast as he continues to nationally expand the Sanford Education programs: Sanford Harmony, Sanford Inspire and the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy.  Each of the programs, coordinated by National University, a private nonprofit university based out of California, is designed to provide innovative, research-based solutions to address critical needs in teacher education, PreK-12 instruction and nonprofit fundraising.

LIU is currently housing all three institutes and helped bring Sanford Inspire and Sanford Harmony the New York City schools as well as districts on Long Island, impacting the lives of thousands of teachers and touching nearly 150,000 children in the New York region.  LIU’s Sanford Institute of Philanthropy launched with its Inaugural Seminar, “Tectonic Shifts in Philanthropy,” on April 27, 2017, in advance of deploying the full course load this fall, aimed at increasing the impact of nonprofits through a unique focus on frontline fundraising and donor relations.

Most recently, Sanford donated $5 million to launch the LIU T. Denny Sanford Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute to advance the University’s leadership in entrepreneurial education. This bold initiative exemplifies how thought leaders across academia and industry can collaborate to provide a business education that meets the needs of 21st century students. The Sanford Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute will be led by Dr. Robert M. Valli, Dean of the AACSB-accredited LIU Post College of Management, now in its 15th year as one of the Princeton Review’s “Best Business Schools.”
