Zaida Gomez, a student at the Long Island University College of Veterinary Medicine, joined the inaugural Student Ambassador Program from dvm360, a leading publication in the veterinary community. Gomez is one of 55 students from around the world chosen to participate in the competitive program designed to elevate student voices and foster networking opportunities. Ambassadors will be contributing to dvm360 through articles, video, and networking with other students and key opinion leaders.
Lacrosse Coach Reaches Historic Career Milestone
Women’s lacrosse head coach Meghan McNamara earned her 200th career win when the Sharks defeated Central Connecticut State on March 13. Now in her 14th season as head coach, McNamara previously led LIU to two national championships in 2012 and 2013, 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and five East Coast Conference titles. She continues to build on her historic legacy as the Sharks are off to a 4-1 start in the 2021 season.
Esteemed Judge Given Lifetime Achievement Award
Justice Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix ‘78, is a recipient of the Hon. Theodore “Ted” Jones Lifetime Achievement Award. Justice Hinds-Radix is the first president of the newly formed Caribbean American Lawyers Association, and she currently serves as associate justice of the New York State Appellate Division, Second Department. Her prestigious career includes numerous other awards such as the 2019 New York State Bar Association’s Diversity Trailblazer Award, and she is a member of dozens of judicial organizations.
Renowned Artist to Present Student Exhibition Awards
Award-winning artist Neill Slaughter, professor of visual arts, will present awards at the 65th annual Parrish Art Museum Student Exhibition, recognizing exceptional artwork created by high school students on Long Island. Professor Slaughter’s resume includes dozens of grants and exhibits on a national and international scale, and he was awarded the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching by Long Island University in 2003.
National Rankings Highlight Innovation at LIU
Intelligent.com recognized Long Island University as a top university in the nation in five major categories. The University was identified as having the best dual degree program for the master’s in library science and information science; the most innovative curriculum for the master’s in accountancy program; the best rehabilitative treatment program in the master’s in athletic training; the best global campus for colleges in New York; and the best student organizations for the master’s in computer science program.
Women’s Hockey Crowned Back-To-Back Champions
The LIU women’s hockey team defended its title as New England Women’s Hockey Alliance champions by defeating Sacred Heart University for the Commissioner’s Cup. The Sharks earned their second straight conference title in their first two years in existence. Team captain Matilda af Bjur netted three goals and an assist while winning 15 of 22 faceoffs in the title game.
Super Bowl Champion Appointed Special Deputy
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office appointed Perry Williams, director of the sports management program at LIU, as a special deputy to serve as a mentor in the department’s youth initiatives. Williams is well known for dedicating his post-football career to community service and education. He brings a unique perspective to his students and mentees as a highly successful collegiate and professional athlete, having won two Super Bowls in his nine-year career with the New York Giants.
LIU Recognized Among ‘Best Nursing Schools in New York’
Long Island University is ranked among the 2021 Best Nursing Schools in New York according to RNCareers.org. The sixth annual report evaluated over 1,700 nursing schools nationwide and is designed to help nursing students in their search for a top RN program. The schools ranked on the list have proven their ability to educate highly skilled nurses, and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at LIU ranked in the top 25.
Marketing Professional Appointed to Government Role
The City of Poughkeepsie confirmed the appointment of Jasmin Davis, ’10, as its new City Chamberlain by a unanimous 9-0 vote in the City Council. Davis, a Poughkeepsie native, previously served as the assistant marketing director for the Poughkeepsie Galleria, and she currently serves on the city’s Waterfront Advisory Committee. She is a Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce “Forty Under 40” Award Recipient as well as a Leadership Dutchess Graduate.
Cross Country Stars Earn All-Conference Honors
Cross-country junior Ralitsa Mihaylova and sophomore Lexi Smith finished fifth and sixth in the women’s Northeast Conference Championship meet, both earning first-team All-NEC honors. Sophomore Bryan Villafuerte led the men’s team with a 14th place finish at the conference championship meet, earning second-team All-NEC honors.
