Women’s hockey star goalkeeper Tindra Holm was named the National Rookie of the Month by the Hockey Commissioners Association. Holm ranks in the top 10 nationally in save percentage among Division I goalkeepers. She has led the defending-champion Sharks to a commanding first-place lead in the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance with a 10-0 record against conference opponents.
Honors Student’s Cancer Research Published in Medical Journal
Biochemistry major Julia Zebak co-authored her first peer-reviewed article in Radiotherapy and Oncology titled “Patterns and Predictors of Relapse in Merkel Cell Carcinoma: Results from a Population-Based Study.” Her research on radiotherapy has shown it to be a very promising treatment for certain types of cancer.
Fashion-Forward Students Give Back to Community Thrift Shop
Students in the Fashion Merchandising Program partnered with The Community Thrift Shop in Huntington to design attractive thematic and seasonal displays that maximize sales in the store. This experiential learning opportunity allows the students to work on signage, messaging, photography and social media to broaden the customer base. Net sales from the shop directly benefit the Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk.
Veterinary Students Win Prestigious National Contest
Tannaz Zafarnia and Magnus Yoshimura came in first and second place respectively in the veterinary division at the 21st Annual American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Animal Welfare Assessment Contest (AWJAC). The College of Veterinary Medicine also placed first in the veterinary division team event ahead of Ohio State and Michigan State.

Students at the LIU Palmer School of Library and Information Science digitized a collection of society photographer Bert Morgan’s never-before-seen photos of Southampton’s wealthiest residents and celebrities at various events. This groundbreaking “Digitizing Local History Sources” project was featured in several media outlets including Dan’s Papers and Patch.
Senior Wrestler Wins Title in Stacked Tournament
Senior Ryan Ferro defeated wrestlers from Penn State, George Mason, Navy and Pitt en route to winning the 174 lb. division title at the 2021 “Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Classic at Millersville University. Ferro’s performance led the Sharks to a third-place overall finish out of more than 60 universities.
Distinguished Faculty Co-Author Clinical Book
George Pagano and Mayya Teytel Cocozza, professors in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department, co-authored Clinical Resource Manual for Graduate Speech Language Pathology Students: Transition from Theory to Practice. This clinical resource serves as a guide for speech language pathology graduate students as they enter their off-site pediatric and adult externship placements.
Professor and Student Team Up for New Jazz Album
LIU Music professor Jeff Lederer, a saxophonist, clarinetist and composer, brought his student Isaiah Johnson ’16, to record clarinet accompaniments for Out Here, the latest album by vocalist Mary LaRose. The album is a tribute to jazz pioneer Eric Dolphy, known for his distinctive style on alto saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet.
Good Morning America Features Alumna’s Inspiring Story
Naketa Younge ’15 was interviewed on Good Morning America by Robin Roberts about her inspiring journey from homeless at 18 to becoming an at-risk youth counselor. Naketa found shelter at Covenant House and earned her master’s degree in mental health counseling from LIU, allowing her to give back to teens and young adults in need.
Volleyball Senior Named Defensive Player of the Year
Senior Anastasia Scott was named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in volleyball for the second consecutive year. She led the conference by a wide margin with 5.38 digs per set, finishing ninth in the nation in the category. Scott was also named first-team All-NEC alongside senior Jovana Stekovic, while junior Karolina Nova earned second-team All-NEC honors.
