Women’s ice hockey defender Paula Bergstrom joins the Swedish National Team in the 2022 Beijing Olympics, becoming the first player in program history to compete in the Olympics. Bergstrom has been instrumental to the Sharks’ early success, serving as an alternate captain and scoring the game-winning goal in the 2020 NEWHA Championship game to earn the University its first hockey title.
Talented Student to Compete in National Vocal Competition
Junior Annie Rodriguez was selected from hundreds of applicants to compete in the American Pops Orchestra NextGen National Competition. Rodriguez joins the top-30 semi-finalists for a chance to earn a cash prize, paid performance opportunities, connections with industry professionals, and the distinction of being one of the best young aspiring vocalists in the country.

Tilles Center, School of Performing Arts Create Sensory-Friendly Immersive Performance
Theatre students, faculty and alumni in partnership with Tilles Center for the Performing Arts created Branching Out, a sensory-immersive performance designed for individuals on the autism spectrum and those with limited movement or complex communication needs. The multi-sensory experience, which debuted this month to school audiences and the public, is about a journey through the four seasons and celebrating change.
Hockey Star Nominated for National Player of the Year
Men’s ice hockey forward Billy Jerry was nominated for the 2022 Hobey Baker Award, the nation’s top award given to the best player in college hockey. Jerry is the first Shark in program history to be nominated for the award. Through 21 games this season, Jerry has tallied five goals and 11 assists to lead the Sharks with 16 total points.
Insurance Industry Leader Appointed to Board of Directors
Michael Mathias ’83 joined the board of directors for CopperPoint Insurance Company, a leading provider of workers’ compensation, commercial property and casualty insurance solutions.During his 25-year career, Mathias has earned the Bay Area CIO Leadership Association’s CIO of the Year award and was named by CIO Magazine to their CIO Hall of Fame.
Finance Law Expert Appointed as Partner
Jessica Romano ’07 was elected as a partner of Schulte Roth & Zabel, a leading international law firm serving the financial services industry. Romano focuses her practice on providing guidance to money transmitters, payments companies and other financial institutions on banking and consumer finance laws, licensing requirements and transactional matters.
Librarian of the Year Recognized for Commitment to Inclusion
Michell Wright Jumpp ’08, ’18 was named the New York Library Association’s Librarian of the Year. Jumpp is the library media specialist at Horizons-On-the-Hudson Magnet School in Newburgh. She is celebrated for her focus on diversifying the school’s book collection, including a section of books in 13 different languages so that every student can see themselves in the literature.
College of Veterinary Medicine Faculty Win Prestigious Awards
Associate Dean of Research Dr. Thomas J. Inzana won the 2021 Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research, and Professor of Clinical Pathology Dr. Tara Piech won the 2021 Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award. The annual awards recognize veterinary educators and researchers around the country for their leadership qualities, teaching skills, and innovative studies that have advanced the world of veterinary medicine.
NYC Mayor Nominates Esteemed Judge to Historic Post
Mayor Eric Adams nominated Justice Sylvia Hinds-Radix ’78 as New York City’s Corporation Counsel, making her the first Caribbean-born woman to serve in the position. She will lead the City’s Law Department, which is primarily responsible for providing legal representation to the City, the Mayor, other elected officials, and City agencies in all affirmative and defensive civil litigation.
