Counseling and Development Faculty Published in APA Journal

Faculty members in the Department of Counseling and Development were published in the competitive journal The Teaching of Psychology, part of the American Psychological Association’s Teaching and Learning division. Dr. Kathy Keefe-Cooperman, Associate Professor and Department Chair, and Dr. Dogukan Ulupina, Assistant Professor, examined care for people with serious mental illness during the period between World War I and World War II using previously unknown records from a state hospital.

Journalism Alumnus Publishes New Book

The latest book by author Wayne Dawkins ’77, Sam Lacy and Wendell Smith: The Dynamic Duo That Desegregated American Sports, was published by Routledge Press. Dawkins is a journalism professor at Hampton University and the historian of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Dean Presents at State Council of Superintendents Summit

Dr. Laura Seinfeld, Dean of the College of Education, Information & Technology, co-presented at the New York State Council of School Superintendents 2024 Fall Leadership Summit. Dr. Seinfeld, who served as the Superintendent of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District from 2013 – 2020, presented on “Navigating Life After the Superintendency: Challenges and Joys.”

ESPN Highlights Spectacular Sharks Touchdown

On a segment during ESPN’s morning show “Get Up,” longtime NFL center Jeff Saturday shined a spotlight on quarterback Ethan Greenwood’s jaw-dropping 55-yard touchdown run during the third quarter of the Sharks’ 28-7 victory over Sacred Heart. Needing just a yard, Greenwood took a QB sneak to the house after emerging through a scrum of players trying to tackle him. Watch it here.

National media outlets Variety and Billboard shined a spotlight on the new
state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos pro studio recently unveiled at the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment. The 2,4000 square-foot studio – equipped with four iso booths for live band recordings, a large tracking room, and a 750 square foot control room equipped with cutting-edge technology – was modeled after the famed Baseline Studios.

Vet Students Earn International Research Fellowship

Two students in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Alana Gates and Carlos Mejia Toro, were named recipients of The Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research Veterinary Student Research Fellowship (FFAR Vet Fellows). The fellowship provides 15 students from around the world the opportunity to pursue research furthering global food security, sustainable animal production and environmental sustainability.

American Psychological Association Features Professor’s Research

Dr. Michael Katz, Assistant Professor in the Clinical Psychology Program, was featured in the American Psychological Association Journal’s Article Spotlight. The article highlighted a study Katz co-authored, published in Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, that used the largest U.S. sample to date to investigate clients’ specific crying experiences in therapy and their relation to outcome, the therapeutic relationship, and client attachment styles.

Women’s Hockey Standouts Sign with Swedish Pro Teams

Two former Sharks are taking their talents to the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (SDHL), one of the premiere professional women’s hockey leagues in Sweden. Alva Johnsson signed with Frölunda HC while Mikayla Lantto inked a deal with Skellefteå AIK.

LIU Nominated for Best of Long Island Awards

Long Island University was again nominated in several categories for Bethpage’s annual “Best of Long Island” awards, including: College or University, College Sports Program, College President, College Sports Coach, Theatre Arts Center, and Mascot. For the past four years, LIU has won in five categories, including Best College or University. Voting is permitted once per day until December 15. Vote here.

Nassau County Celebrates 125 Years at Sharks Home Opener

In celebration of its 125th anniversary, Nassau County hosted “Nassau Day” at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium during the Sharks’ home opener against Lehigh. The county sponsored complimentary tickets to youth football leagues and organizations across the region to mark this significant milestone, providing young athletes with the opportunity to experience the thrill of Division I football firsthand.
