Students Join Global Effort to Support Ukraine

LIU students organized fundraising and awareness events through LIU Cares for Ukrainians affected by the war, including a Night for A Cause at the Brooklyn campus, humanitarian campaigns and an upcoming benefit. All proceeds from the events are donated to UNICEF’s emergency assistance fund providing relief services to children and families.

Seven Senior Sharks Sign Professional Hockey Contracts

The men’s hockey senior class set a new school record with seven student-athletes signing contracts to play in professional leagues. Tyler Welsh, Jake Stevens, Billy Jerry, Max Balinson, Carson Musser and Jordan Timmons will all join teams in the East Coast Hockey League, and Derek Osik will join the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Titarsolej Earns First-Team All-America Honors

Sophomore gymnast Mara Titarsolej was named a first-team All-American on the uneven bars by the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association. Her record-breaking season included winning the East Atlantic Gymnastics League championship in uneven bars, earning the league’s Specialist of the Year honor, and ranking eighth in the nation among all NCAA competitors.

Honors Student Accepted to Prestigious Study Abroad Program

The Council on International Educational Exchange selected Honors College student Stephany Krutiy to participate in its highly competitive study abroad program in Seol, South Korea. Krutiy will join classmates from around the world to take courses at a top-ranked Korean university with co-curricular activities designed to increase intercultural understanding.

Executive Director Appointed to Lead BOCES HR Operations

Thomas McGrath ’93 was selected as the executive director of the department of human resources for Nassau BOCES. McGrath previously served as an administrator at Eastern Suffolk BOCES for over 20 years and was an executive board member for the Suffolk County High School Principals Association for 10 years.

LIU Basketball Legend Honored as Nation’s Best High School Coach

Tamika Dudley ’03 won the 2022 Naismith High School Girls Coach of the Year Award, considered the highest national honor in high school and college basketball. Dudley is the head coach of Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., and her historic LIU career included setting all-time records in nearly every statistical category and leading the University to its first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Distinguished Educator Selected as Superintendent

Dr. Lisamarie Spindler ’11 was appointed as the superintendent of the Hudson City School District. Her wealth of experience at all levels of education includes previous roles as superintendent of finance, assistant superintendent of curriculum, principal, assistant principal and teacher in districts throughout Orange County, New York.

Roosevelt School and Society of Presidential Descendants Presents Civics Day Award

The Roosevelt School at Long Island University and the Society of Presidential Descendants presented the inaugural National Civics Day Award for Excellence in Civic Education to the Glen Cove School District. The annual award invites schools around the country to showcase their ongoing civic education programming and how they celebrate National Civics Day on October 27.

Standout Shark Breaks University Scoring Record

Men’s lacrosse midfielder Will Snelders became the University’s all-time leader in career goals when he scored his 151st goal against UMass. Snelders previously broke the school record for most goals in a season (61) during his freshman year, in which he also scored 10 goals in a single game and was named the conference Rookie of the Year.

Education Leader Delivers International Plenary Address

Dr. Helaine W. Marshall, Director of LIU Hudson’s TESOL and Bilingual Education Programs, gave the James E. Alatis Plenary Address at the TESOL 2022 International Convention and English Language Expo, the largest professional development event in the TESOL field. Dr. Marshall’s presentation focused on “Creating Fertile Spaces for Instructional Innovation in a Digital Age.”
