The LIU Men’s Ice Hockey team is competing against the nation’s top teams this season. In October, the Sharks took the #16 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions and the #5 ranked Boston College Eagles to the final whistle. This weekend, the team travels to Hamford, Connecticut to face off against the Quinnipiac University Bobcats, currently ranked #5.
LIU Hosts Statewide Education Convention
Long Island University hosted over 150 local students and educators as part of the Take a Look at Teaching convention. Dr. Laura Seinfeld, Dean of the School of Education, joined several other New York educational leaders for the panel discussion on how to address shortages facing many school districts across the state.
LIU Taps FAMU’s Stormie Charles as Cross Country Head Coach
LIU proudly introduced Stormie Charles as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross-country teams. Charles arrives at LIU after a successful tenure as an assistant coach at Florida A&M University (FAMU), where her organizational prowess and tailored training programs stood out. During her time in Tallahassee, Charles offered guidance for student-athlete development, both on and off the course. She also ensured smooth team travel experiences, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie among the athletes.
Roc Nation School Leads Panel with New York Giants, United Way
The Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment coordinated a special Hispanic Heritage Month Career Panel with the United Way of New York City and the New York Giants. The panel featured New York Giants star linebacker Jonathan Casillas, DJ Camilo of Hot 97, and Esmeralda Baez, bestselling author and CEO of Elite Vision Media. Panelists spoke to local high school students about how to best pursue careers in the music, sports and entertainment industries.
International Pharmacy Association Awards LIU Faculty
The American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) awarded two LIU Pharmacy faculty members at the organization’s annual conference. Dr. Douglas Jennings, Director of Assessment and Accreditation, won best paper and Dr. Azita H. Talasaz, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, won the PRN New Investigator Award. The international association is the professional home for clinical pharmacy practitioners, scientists, educators, administrators, students, residents, and fellows from more than 60 countries.
Women’s Volleyball Advances to NCAA Tournament
The LIU women’s volleyball team is heading to “The Big Dance.” The Sharks earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament and won the Northeast Conference championship after defeating Farleigh Dickerson University in four sets. Camelia Melendez, a junior from Caguas, Puerto Rico, won MVP with 30 kills for the entire tournament.
Education Magazine Highlights LIU Students
On Board! Magazine highlighted the work of Doctor of Education students Lars Clemensen and Michael Carlson, who serve as superintendent and assistant superintendent of Hampton Bays Union Free School District, respectively. The publication features innovative practices in education and spotlighted the district’s use of trauma narrative exposure therapy to help immigrant students process their journey to America.
Student Athlete Wins Statewide Award
The New York Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance awarded LIU student athlete Kevin Wilson with the Departmental Major of the Year Award. Wilson is studying Health and Physical Education and played running back for the football team. In 2022, he earned placement on the NEC Fall Commissioner’s and Academic Honor Roll.
Roc Nation School Hosts NFL Super Bowl Champion
Super Bowl Champion and fashion icon Victor Cruz spoke with LIU students at the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports and Entertainment, offering career insights and discussing his remarkable career. Cruz is a current ESPN analyst and a former Pro Bowl wide receiver for the New York Giants. His fashion ventures have earned him recognition by GQ, Vogue and Vanity Fair and he was the first athlete to ever design and release a lifestyle shoe with NIKE.
Men’s Soccer Advances to NCAA Tournament
The LIU men’s soccer team punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament and claimed another NEC championship, defeating Sacred Heart University 1-0. This is the second time in three seasons the Sharks have made the NCAA Tournament. NEC Player of the Year Emil Jaaskelainen scored on a header off a corner from NEC Tournament MVP Alan Martinez for the game-winning goal.
